Glaucoma is a serious eye disease that damages the optic nerve and, if left untreated, may result in blindness. Often called “the sneak thief of sight,” people who have glaucoma may experience no pain or vision symptoms until their eyesight is irreversibly damaged. The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped window that covers the front of the eye. It is similar to the glass face of a watch or the outermost glass lens in a camera. Its purpose is to focus light entering the eye and protect the eye from the environment. The retina is a layer of nerve cells lining the back wall of the eye. If you think of the eye as a camera, the retina functions as the film of the camera.
